San Diego Wild Animal Park
The Wild Animal Park, a 1,750 acre/700 hectare game reserve situated about 30mi/50km north of San Diego, was opened some years ago by the Zoological Society of San Diego (which also manages the zoo with its more than 500 animals). An almost hour-long safari through the park provides the opportunity to watch some 2,500 animals native to Africa and Asia in a natural environment. Another recently established attraction is the most extensive planted area of bonsai trees in the American West. Plans are afoot to extend the Kupanda Botanical Center into a so-called Baja Garden featuring succulents and cacti native to Baja California.
